What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a type of non-invasive treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in an atmospheric pressurised environment or chamber. It exposes your body to up to 100% oxygen, which in turn will increase the amount of oxygen within your blood and tissues.
As Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy takes place in a pressurised chamber, it delivers oxygen that is two to three times higher than normal air pressure. This then helps your lungs to gather and absorb more oxygen. Oxygen helps the tissues in your body not only heal from the inside out, but also aids your white blood cells to withstand current and future infections. As your blood carries the extra oxygen throughout your body, it infuses the injured tissue with more oxygen so that the targeted area can start healing.
Our brand new Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy machine is a monoplace chamber, meaning it is fit for one person. It’s an extremely effective chamber with the latest, state of the art technology and design. It includes entertainment systems and air-cooling systems, as well as sensors for O2, CO2, humidity and temperature. There are automated systems in place that allow you to record your session, as well as several safety features – such as safety valves and an intercom system allowing for two-way communication.
Some of the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen include:
- Accelerates recovery
- Boosts cellular rejuvenation
- Promotes collagen production
- Reduces pain and bruising
- Soothes swelling and inflammation
- Assists with mental clarity
- Enhances energy levels
What you can expect during your Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session:
As our machine is a monoplace chamber (a chamber made for one person), you will climb into the chamber and lay down on the platform where you will continue lying while receiving treatment. Each treatment session is 60 minutes long, however, if you would like to finish your session earlier for any reason, you are more than welcome to.
After the chamber door is sealed, you may notice a gentle hissing noise as the chamber gradually fills with oxygen and the internal pressure increases. This may cause a sensation, similar to what you might encounter during a flight. To alleviate this ear pressure, you can yawn, or take a sip of water while pinching your nose shut. You will continue to breathe normally throughout the therapy session.
As you approach the end of your therapy session, one of our medical staff will systematically reduce the pressure within the chamber. This allows your body to acclimate to the pressure returning to the normal level outside the chamber. They will then examine your vital signs. This includes taking your blood pressure and pulse, as well as checking your ears. If you have diabetes, they will test your blood sugar (glucose) too.
